Project Skill Levels

The Craft Yarn Council creates and sets project skill level standards. Now you can easily find the right project for your skill level. Please note these are guidelines only - and many designers set their own standards. You can find more knitting and crochet project standards at the Craft Yarn Council.

Beginner

Knit: For first time knitters, basic knit and purl stitches. Minimal shaping.

Crochet: For first time crocheters, basic stitches. Minimal shaping.

Easy

Knit: Basic stitches, repetitive stitch patterns, simple color changes, and simple shaping and finishing.

Crochet: Basic Stitches, repetitive stitch patterns, simple color changes, and simple shaping and finishing.

Intermediate

Knit: Variety of stitches: cables and lace, simple intarsia, double-pointed needles or knit in the round needle. Mid-level shaping and finishing.

Crochet: Variety of techniques such as basic lace or color patterns, mid level shaping and finishing.

Experienced

Knit: Advanced techniques and stitches: short rows, fair isle, brioche,  intricate intarsia, cables, lace patterns and numerous color changes.

Crochet: Intricate stitch patterns, techniques and dimensions such as non-repeating patterns, multi-color techniques, small hooks, detailed shaping and refined finishing
