Why organize yarn by fiber content?

Isn't yarn all about the same? No way! Yarns can be shiny, wooly, bouncy, stiff, soft, delicate, washable, natural, breathable and even water resistant. These properties are mostly determined by the fiber content of the yarn. Yarns' characteristics provide us with the end result we are trying to achieve. For example, if you are looking for a light, loft yarn that is hypo-allergenic you may want to use an alpaca yarn. Need a machine washable yarn that's durable and soft for baby?
